How to fix computer boot problems!

Post by garfunkel »

Have a boot issue with your Linux or windows based computer? here is how to fix it!

Linux

download the Super Grub Disc from http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/?section=download

Open up your favorite CD/DVD burning application and search for an option such as "burn image to disc", burn the newly downloaded image file to a CD at the LOWEST speed possible.

Reboot your computer, when the first screens come up after turning back on you will need to enter the "BIOS" (or Basic Input Output System), you should see something like "press DEL to enter setup" come up on the screen, press the key indicated and you should have a new screen come up that is usually blue and contains lots of information. Try to find something called "boot order", change the settings so that the first boot device is set to CD/DVD and HDD is second. save and reboot your computer.

Now you should get a boot prompt, press enter and accept the default options, accept the license etc. When you get a menu with lots of options on it, select "GNU/Linux" and fix the boot of Linux. Select the partition of the HDD where your boot files are stored and let it do it's thing. When it's done, reboot your computer and change the boot order in bios to boot from the HDD first again!

Windows

If you have an xp cd - insert the cd and reboot your computer, when the first screens come up after turning back on you will need to enter the "BIOS" (or Basic Input Output System), you should see something like "press DEL to enter setup" come up on the screen, press the key indicated and you should have a new screen come up that is usually blue and contains lots of information. Try to find something called "boot order", change the settings so that the first boot device is set to CD/DVD and HDD is second. save and reboot your computer. Now you should get a message "press any key to boot cd", press any key! Now, once setup finishes loading up press "R" to enter the recovery console. Select your installation and you should be at a command prompt.

type:

fixboot

then:

fixmbr

then type exit or quit and restart your computer, change the boot settings in the bios again to boot from HDD first! This should fix most basic boot issues.

If you do not have an XP CD - download the Super Grub Disc from http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/?section=download
