importance???

is it important to learn things like mysql, perl and php???? does it depend on applications or will these supersede "normal" html, xml, and dhtml

Yes, to some extent it is important. They add interactivity to your site and will also make the developer's life easier.

They need a server with PHP / MySQL to work though.

you don't NEED to know that stuff, just the basic will work fine (html, xml, and dhtml)

but if you are planning on making websites for a long time and want to get good at it i will suggest learning that stuff then
