Hey I just started using Ubuntu and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for some good programs for it?

So far (a day and a half) it's great...

I have been using Linux for perhaps a year and a half or so, i have used ubuntu, DSL, puppy linux, gentoo, open suse, fedora 7 test, pclinuxos and a few others. For me, ubuntu is the best option :)

for audio i would recommend amarok.

for video i would recommend kaffeine or xine based players like gxine. kaffeine is also really good for those with tv tuners (like me)

for ftp, i would recommend gftp

You might like this link, it's like the "ubuntu for dummies" book:

I have still have the 10 cds that were sent by the promotors http://ubuntu.com. The distro was pretty good but didn't have drivers for all my (Dell) laptop hw. I've messed with better linux distros since. There is some pretty wizzo software for linux but I must admit I find the whole linux trip a bit of a trial, like most windows users. Things are certainly improving though and I hear you can buy new Dell systems with linux installed these days. This is the only way forward really.

Probably the best programs you can get are Wine or that Virtual PC thing for Linux.
