color troubles

forgive me for asking a VERY basic question but it's being a real pain in the ass......
i was making something on photoshop the other day, i had a circle that i then cut another circle out of to create a loop shape that was then split...
i tried using hue/saturation to change the color of one section but couldnt get the exact color i needed. but when i use the fill tool, it colors the whole shape that i've selected, and doesnt fade well, so i end up with a sharp, edgy shape.... how do i get it to change colors, and change the colors on the edges.... i.e: take a blue shape, color it red, and the light blue goes light red on the edges
