Idea Explanation:
Geni wont be successful if all they can do is get people to add themselves and a couple of relatives and then rarely revisit the site. They want viral growth and the kind of big page view numbers that the large social networks see - up to 20 per day per visitor. To get there theyre adding a few proven features to the site. And by adding these features, they are essentially creating a social network with the family, as well as family friends, as the core. Theres a direct **** to facebook - instead of colleges and universities, Geni is focusing on family units.
New features include:
photo uploading and sharing
map view of people in your tree by birthplace or current location
calendar of upcoming birthdays, anniversaries and other family events
Add family friends as friends of your family tree
Gedcom export - export your tree in the standard genealogy file format
All of these features will incentivize users to use the site frequently, even daily. The photo sharing feature is modeled on Facebook - users can upload photos and they are then available to everyone in the family tree. Photos can also be tagged with the names of anyone in the tree or any family friends. Those pictures will then appear in the profile of those users. That means peoples profiles get built out even without their active participation.
Geni also has more features planned in the near future. These include Gedcom imports, family tree mergers, and an internal messaging system.
Idea Description:Famiva is a family social networking and family-tree building tool that has recently launched.
Famiva lets you easily add family members and friends to your tree, and send an email invite to anyone in your tree that is not yet a member. This function is similar to Geni, and Im wondering if Famiva will automatically connect related members based on previously entered and corroborated information, as Geni will do. The content that is accessible to you is based on what your family tree members have added, so in this sense it operates like a private group. The stories function acts like a family blog, and you can insert videos from Google and Yahoo into your entries. This ability to add media is also enabled for calendar entries and events.
Famiva is very similar to KinCafe in its functionality and purpose. In order to stand out from the crowd, Famiva can add on new social features as they grow, focusing on tools that would would be used by a family. Enabling the stories tool to be formatted as a scrapbook that can be published into a physical book is often considered a value-added tool for family-oriented services. Bringing in more social features, such as widgets or contact managers would appeal to the avid online networkers using Famiva.
We could combine the features they have. Then we can enable the efficiency of sharing 'videos, files, etc' through a network specifically only for families or friends in their network. So, in another words, it's like enabling one to share within his/her own network of friends, family members, etc or publically.
