Not necessarily, you can trust your friend everytime. He may be giving you referal links, that are filled with viruses in within.

Smokyhosts is very good, but it's hard to find a free domain name, as in http://www.mydomain.com rather than myaccount.domain.com

Domains aren't expensive at all, you can easily get .com under $8/year.
