In New Zealand there is 13 years of schooling.
Year 1 to Year 6 = Primary School
Year 7 to Year 8 = Intermediate School
Year 9 to Year 13 = High School
Education is only compulsory up to the age of 16.
After Year 13 you may continue onto University.
Before Year 1 you may goto kindergarten.
Year 1 through to Year 13 schools are free unless you goto a Private school.

In most places in the US (and a few other countries), the education is 14 years (preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1-12). Those are usually free, depending on if you're going to public schools. Private schools usually cost.
Elementary = 7 yrs. [ preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1-5 ]
Junior High (Middle) = 3 yrs. [ grades 6-8 ]
Senior High = 4 yrs. [ grades 9-12 ]
After high school, you may select to go to various universities/colleges/career schools. Those, however, are not free, unless you're lucky enough to get scholarships.
