Does anyone know how do you make NPCs react to your character?

My rpg right now has several maps and I have several NPCs in each map. I want the main character to be able to talk to the other NPCs when s/he is right next to the NPC? Do I have to use a loop and check through each NPC on the map and see if the player is next to them?

My graphic creation skills are really bad, so I cant use graphics.
