Whenever it's time to upgrade AMD seems to offer the best performance per dollar.

I use Linux Mint MATE 64 bit with mint-meta-xfce desktop most of the time. I do work in an LMDE vm because it's portable and a rolling distro. I use windows 7 sometimes for games that don't run well in linux.

Ideally don't use Windows XP, it has reached it's end of life and MS is no longer supporting it.
